What Is an RCD Protected Consumer Unit?
A consumer unit is the central point of an electrical installation. It distributes electricity throughout the property and contains protective devices designed to isolate circuits if faults occur.
Modern consumer units differ substantially from older fuse boxes. Instead of relying solely on traditional fuses, they incorporate sophisticated protective devices that can detect potentially dangerous electrical conditions in a fraction of a second.
One of the most important of these devices is the Residual Current Device.
An RCD continuously monitors the flow of electricity through a circuit. Under normal conditions, the electrical current flowing into a circuit should equal the amount returning from it. If an imbalance occurs, perhaps because electricity is leaking through damaged wiring or passing through a person who has received an electric shock, the RCD quickly disconnects the supply.
This rapid disconnection can dramatically reduce the risk of serious injury or death.
Modern consumer units may also incorporate Residual Current Breakers with Overcurrent Protection, often known as RCBOs. These devices provide both fault current protection and overload protection on individual circuits, offering an even greater level of electrical safety.
