Can a non-OZEV-registered person install a 7 kVA EV charger?
Technically speaking, anyone with some electrical experience could attempt to install a 7 kVA EV charger. However, doing so without OZEV registration can lead to serious issues. Installing an EV charger involves high-voltage connections, load management, and complex wiring that must be integrated safely with your property’s existing electrical system.
A non-registered installer might not be familiar with the regulations, safety procedures, or documentation required for such an installation. As a result, you could face several problems.
The first is safety. Improper installation can create serious electrical hazards, including shocks, fires, and equipment damage. A 7 kVA charger delivers a substantial amount of power, so even a small mistake could have major consequences.
The second is insurance. Many home and business insurance providers will not cover damage caused by unapproved electrical work. If the charger is installed incorrectly or causes an incident, your insurance claim could be invalidated.
The third issue is eligibility for grants. Only OZEV-approved installers can carry out installations that qualify for government funding. Attempting to install the charger yourself or using a non-approved electrician will immediately make you ineligible for any financial support.
Finally, there’s the matter of warranty. Manufacturers often specify that their chargers must be installed by qualified, certified electricians. If the installer isn’t OZEV-registered, your product warranty could be void.
